One of the main reasons we love Nintendo, is down to their ability to evolve and reinvent themselves as a company. When the Nintendo Switch came on the market in 2017, it was a literal game-changer, and a whole new era for the company was born.

During this time we’ve had an incredible selection of games, from old favourites like Super Mario and Donkey Kong, to new favourites like Arms and Splatoon 2, but with the 2018 release of Labo, Nintendo have gone a step further in their creative journey.

Whilst on paper (ok, card), the simplicity of folding pieces of cardboard and somehow linking it into the digital world of gaming, may seem a little…odd, it is strangely, and dare we say it, excitingly refreshing.

The Vehicle Pack is the third Toy-Con pack to hit the shelves, but it is the first Labo pack to reach the ToysWorld office.

Getting started is really easy, just open the box, put the game cartridge in and follow the on-screen instructions to put the builds together. Being a father of 2 kids, Labo screams out to be a family activity, and getting my children involved in the build process was incredibly fun.

In a way, it is quite compatible to LEGO – once you’ve built everything, the actual finished product has to stand up to enjoyability of building, so once the lustre of the USP has faded (i.e, having put all the builds together), all eyes are on the gameplay, and fortunately this holds up…really well!

You effectively have an open world, with 10 zones to explore, in which you can use your vehicles; land, sea and air are all covered and you can easily switch between each via the toy-con key build, that slots into each vehicle.

The motion control responsiveness is awesome and the cardboard builds ironically add some realism to the whole immersive experience. With cross-game compatibility planned, including use of the steering wheel in Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, the future is really bright for Labo. This isn’t just a flash in the pan for Nintendo, and we cannot wait to see what’s next for the range.
