It is with great excitement that we return to review the LEGO Minecraft range, and what better set to kick off with than The Waterfall Base [21134].

Out of all the LEGO Minecraft sets to date, this is among our favourites; the different levels of play allow you to have Steve and Alex at the ground level of their base, all the way up the waterfall steps to the upper roof garden level, which features a fenced off area for the sheep. You can also remove the roof garden panels to gain access to the interior from above.

Perhaps the most impressive feature is the ability to swing out the set, which is in 3 sections, and once fully retracted to its extent, it creates a completely different layout for you to play with. It also completely exposes the inside of the base to allow you to see and interact with your interior and possessions. In a way this reminds us of The First Night [21115] set, but feels even more dynamic. There are even 3 additional rebuilds to completely change the layout of the set, if you prefer.

Some of the stand-out features of the set are revealed when you swing it out to the interior view; 2 beds are included, along with 2 treasure chests, 3 crafting tables, a furnace and an anvil. The bedroom in particular is a lovely touch with a bookshelf / table, a plant pot and closable doors. There is also a lava feature that slides away to reveal a secret entrance to the base.

There are some lovely design accents within the set that any fan of Minecraft will instantly recognise; from the item frames that hold a pickaxe and a fish, to the diamond pickaxe floor tiles and even the red apple hanging from the tree! There are also sugar cane blocks and wheat as you go up the waterfall, as well as a pumpkin.

As for minifigures, you get Steve, Alex, an Enderman, a zombie, a cat and a a dyed sheep. There are also a number of accessories, including swords, a fishing rod, a sword, a shovel and shears.

At just £74.99 this is a little more on the expensive side, but the brick to cost ratio is just £0.10p and if it’s value for money you’re looking for, then you can’t go wrong with this set. The ability to change the whole configuration of the set with a simple swivel, is genius, and you can also easily connect other sets, like The Iron Golem [21123], to enhance your playscape.
