productinfoDisney Infinity 3.0: Play Without Limits now welcomes Star Wars to the ever-growing collection of Marvel, Disney and DisneyPixar characters, stories and worlds. Together new heroes can join forces with characters from previous editions and embark on adventures as big as your imagination in the 3.0 Toy Box! Disney Infinity encourages you to play your way, whether you explore open-world creation in the Toy Box or story-driven gameplay inside Play Sets!

Having lost interest in video games soon after Mario went all 3D, we only just got back into gaming thanks to the launch of LEGO Dimensions. We were therefore unaware that Disney Infinity even existed, and now having played the latest iteration (3.0), we have been truly blown away by the immensely enjoyable, entertaining and exciting gameplay it provides.

We recently got hold of the Disney Infinity 3.0: Starter Pack for Wii U, which comes with the Disney Infinity base, Anakin (Star Wars) figure, Ahsoka (Star Wars) figure, Twilight Of The Republic (Star Wars) piece, as well as the game software and web code.

Setting up is dead easy, you just plug the base into your console via the USB socket, then place your game figures and see-through game piece on the base and fire up the software. After setting up your Disney account, which is the work of a minute, you’re launched directly into the gameplay by completing short tasks for Star Wars, Inside Out and Mickey Mouse. Once completed you are taken to the Toy Box Hub where you are introduced to 6 characters, each standing before a world which you can fully explore. It’s basically a giant tutorial, but unlike most tutorials, you’ll want to keep coming back! Not only do you learn the in’s and out’s of Infinity, but you get to immerse yourself in beautifully constructed landscapes and points of interest. As you familiarise yourself with each of the 6 characters, you can talk to them to solve tasks and unlock more content. The skills you learn along the way will also help you when you play any of the Toy Box levels. You can also collect spark bubbles to unlock content. Our favourite section was Main Street U.S.A; if you’ve ever been to Disneyland, you will instantly be filled with nostalgia as you walk down the street towards Sleeping Beauty’s castle.

Once you’ve honed your skills in the Toy Box Hub, you’re ready to play the game proper; just navigate your character to the central beam of light at the centre of the Toy Box Hub, and you can enter Twilight Of The Republic.

As mentioned, with the Starter Pack you get 2 Star Wars characters to play with; Anakin and Ahsoka – you can switch between these two characters on the Infinity base. The main Twilight Of The Republic game piece sits at the back of the base, and as action happens on screen coloured lights cycle through the clear game piece as well as around the edges of the circular character pieces.

As for the gameplay itself, it’s completely immersive and engaging. The visuals are stunning and you really feel part of the Star Wars universe as you play. There was a fantastic level where you take control of a starship and have a shootout in space, after which you then land on Coruscant. This, again, makes the player feel they’ve really been on an adventure and due to the variety of levels, your always on the edge of your seat. Just as you complete one level, your intention may be to put it down to have a break, but such is the addictiveness of the gameplay, that you can help but continue onwards.

In addition to Twilight Of The Republic, you can also purchase the following Play Set expansions:

–  Star Wars: The Force Awakens (3.0)
–  Star Wars: Rise Against The Empire (3.0)
–  Marvel Battlegrounds (3.0)
–  Marvel’s The Avengers (2.0)
–  Marvel’s Spider-Man (1.0)
–  Marvel’s Guardians Of The Galaxy (1.0)
–  Disney: Inside Out (3.0)
–  Disney: Toy Story In Space (1.0)
–  Disney: The Lone Ranger (1.0)
–  Disney: Pirates Of The Caribbean (1.0)
–  Disney: The Incredibles (1.0)
–  Disney: Monsters University (1.0)
–  Disney: Cars (1.0)

All Play Sets are backwards compatible but anything lower than 3.0 will only work on their corresponding Disney Infinity base. You can also purchase a wide range of characters to play with from the Disney, Marvel and Star Wars universes.

If you’re anything like us and are a self-confessed Disneyholic then Disney Infinity is a must-have game that you’ll find impossible to put down.
